All of the titles have double meanings and this is no exception. It is more than the name of the girl in the story. If you look up the meaning of Eve in the bible you will see it means "life", put this together with line and you have lifeline. Now read the closing pages of the book - notice the images of drowning and references to water. Eveline has a chance to escape the paralysis of Dublin a "lifeline" that will save her, but she rejects this chance and metaphorically drowns
