Jeffery Meyers says that hemingway's favorite authors (as of 1925) were Marryat (who wrote sea-stories), Ivan Turgenev and Henry Fielding. He would soon list Conrad and twain and Crane, but I've never seen mention of his having read or liken or influenced by Melville.
