 The Scarlet Letter/ Custom House

Hi,
I'm wondering if any Hawthorne enthusiasts can tell me whether it is imperative that I read the preface to the second edition of The Scarlet Letter, The Custom House, before reading the main text. I'm just starting the book, and I'm finding it slow and a little dry and am wondering if it would be more interesting if I read it after I read the novel? Or is it important to the story and therefore I should read the preface first? Please give me any and all opinions. Thank you.

I recommend you read it although it seemingly does not seem to ready partain to Scarlet Letter, you will see the connections later! good luck!

The custom house talks of why Nathaniel Hawthorne was inspired to write about this story to begin. According to the custom house, he found a letter and the book is telling of the story behind the scarlet letter that was found. It really says nothing about the novel. The custom house does not even the true story of what inspired him to write the book in the first place. He wrote the novel from guilt of his ansestors and their attachment to the Salem Witch Trials. Hate to tell you, but all the Scarlet letter is rather dry, unless of course you like transcendentalist writing.
