Hi...I'm Claire, and I'm new here.
I've read Hardy's poem "Neutral Tones"; his seeming 'despisement' of love has made me fall in love with him.
The way the couple in the poem (or at least the speaker) think of love seems uncanny when I realize how I see love. :)
Anyways....I've got ONE PROBLEM...
The third stanza confuses me. I understand its literal meaning, that the woman's smile has faded, and replaced by a fake grin, but what is the imagry about??
What is the "ominous bird a-wing"?
The smile on your mouth was the deadest thing,
Alive enough to have strength to die
And a grin of bitterness swept thereby,
Like an ominous bird a-wing.
HMMMMMMMMmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm!!
