I just read The Earl King with my DeutscheSprachkurs colleagues. We have about 6 different meanings from political, to developmental (leaving childhood), to parental, to psychological to the art of dying. Anyone who can clear this up for us--either Goethe's own intention or your grasp of the "official" interpretation will be much appreciated.
