In Reply to: Goethe quote? "Fragments of a great confession..." posted by tom on November 15, 19100 at 04:30:31:
I coincidentally stumbled across a clearer reference to this, so call off the search. It's supposed to be from "Poetry and Truth", part 4 of his autobiography. I haven't confirmed the exact line, but in case anyone's interested, here is the more complete indirect quote I found...
"Goethe empfand sein Werk als 'Bruchstücke einer grossen Konfession, in der jede persönliche Erfahrung in ein Bild, ein Gedicht' verwandelt sei."
: I read an indirect reference to a Goethe quote - the person said something like: "Goethe once said that all an artist's [or writer's] creations are fragments of a great confession." I haven't been able to find more details anywhere, though. Does anyone know the exact quote (preferably in German) or what it's from?
