: I have Read Crime and punishment about three times and have a controversy about what some people have said about Svidrigailov. They say he is a representation of evil, but I do not see it. Can you help and explain to me how he represents evil. Even though it is an easy thing to pick up I sense no evil in him. But I thing this is an interesting topic and want to know what they see in him that is evil that I am missing. Thank you.

this is just a shot in the dark and probably a waste of time but i think it was his obscure intentions towards Raskolnikovs sister and the unresolved death of his wife. he really doesnt come off as a solid character to me, i always saw him as another tormentor of Rask. conscience because of the way he inadvertently told Rask. that he knew what happened to the old woman. just a thought though, nothing to take seriously, ive only read it once
