Svidrigailov's philoshopy is the same as that of Raskolnikov, except taken to an extreme. He also believes himself to be a Nietzschean superman, but more completely than does Rodion. His suicide foreshadows Raskolnikov's punishment in Siberia, and serves as another example of the human's need to be given punishment for their actions.
Rodya believes that Svidrigailov is a common s, and cannot see himself in the mirror, believing Svid to be a lower rather than a person just like him, trying to prove himself higher than all others because of intellectual capacity. He is unable to prove this, and in the end takes his punishment without complaint and is redeemed.
