You definitely are NOT being to specific. It is good to know what you want and you are smart to educate yourself BEFORE buying a dog. So here are my recommendations:
1. Check your local shelter for a smaller mixed breed. There are tons of them around that really need a good home.
If you really wish to buy a dog I would suggest:
Cavalier King Charles Spaniel
Pug
French Bulldog
Whippet
I would NOT suggest a Jack Russell for your situation as someone else did because they can be VERY noisy and extremely high energy.
