De Tocqueville discussed the formation of national character as being like that of the formation of individual humans. He links later character traits to events that occur in the infancy of the person and the nation. This predates Freud by over half a century. Does anyone know where the idea of that early childhood/infancy shapes later character/personality. Was this a notion that predated De Tocqueville as well?
