I think you will find that evolution, both micro and macro is not questioned by most of the scientific world. What is being debated is the process by which it occurs.
As far as homo erec-tus and homo sapiens being contemporary is concerned, I don't think there is any consensus about it yet.
However, I am a layman like yourself, and can only suggest that you research on the internet. The amount of information out there is quite mind-blowing! :-)
