The National Science Foundation just published "Science and Engineering Indicators 2000" which eses the state of scientific knowledge in America. The results are very discouraging. Only 17 per cent of the American public are aware of scientific advances, 21 per cent could explain what means to do something scientifically, and 20 per cent could say what DNA is.
Now for the really bad news. More than half of the people asked could NOT say how long it takes for the Earth to circle the Sun. Most people did not know what is a molecule.
Now for the completely depressing part. Most people confused pseudoscientific "mumbo-jumbo" (UFOs, alien abduction, astrology, and yes, scientific creationsism) with real science.
No wonder creationism won't go away.
