I never said that scientists would immediately declare the theory untenable. It may well turn out that there is a good explanation that I am not aware of right now.
They would try to come up with sound reasons to give a legitimate explanation of the observation. If they could not do that, they would modify the theory. If the theory turns out to be unmodifiable they would abandon it. This is the way science works.
Take a look at the history of the Phlogiston Theory, and you will see what I mean.
