"In a speech this afternoon before Jesse Jackson’s Rainbow Coalition, VP candidate Joseph Lieberman re-ured the gathering that he does not practice the Jewish faith. Although he admitted that certain of his past statements could be construed as supportive of Judaism, Lieberman insisted that he remains firmly within the Christian fold. “As the Vice President of this country, I do not believe the constitution allows me to contradict the religious beliefs of the President,” explained Lieberman, “I therefore want to make it very clear that I support Christianity. I have always supported Christianity, and I always will support Christianity.”
Following his speech, Representative Maxine Waters said that she felt more comfortable supporting the democratic ticket. “I did have some concerns about his Jewish faith and how it might impact his treatment of blacks, but today he has clearly ured us that he is a practicing Christian, and that is good enough for me.”
Many at the gathering praised Lieberman for bringing conviction and principle to the democratic ticket. “With Joe Lieberman on the ticket, I know we have a good solid liberal Christian who won’t compromise his principles for anyone,” praised San Francisco mayor Willie Brown.
Lieberman is expected to discuss his gender at a gathering of the National Organization for Women later this week."
