Actually you'll find that most northern protestants are as opposed to abortion as the catholic church. The ban on contraception is more of an issue. I agree that it was silly of the south to frame their constitution and p laws that were so objectionable to the north. But surely that was their democratic right. Presumeably people weighed things up and decided that the catholic values were more important. About 10 years Dr Fitzgerald's government launched a campaign to reform the constitution to make it more acceptable to the north. I think contraception is now available albeit in a limited way, but obviously abortion is a non-negotiable for the catholic church. However the south has repeatedly made it clear that what they want is a federal solution - the north would be self-governing and would frame their own laws. Recently the south has been bending over backwards to woo the unionists. At the time of the Good Friday agreement they abandoned the constitutional claim to the north. Just recently they've even started to build a visitor centre at the battle of the Boyne site!
