From Steve or my perspective, this country is quite liberal, and from Wulf's perspective it is probably rabidly conservative. However, Wulf is right that, compared to any other European country, we have the lowest taxes and social spending (and the lowest unemployment and highest growth - funny that). From a broader perspective, we are a conservative country.
However, I think this distinction is becoming less relevant. Wulf and Wendy may disagree but my understanding is that the Labor parties in Britain, New Zealand and Australia are all shedding their more liberal doctrine and have moved noticeably to the right since the early 1980s. Blair and I are hardly political soul mates, but he is certainly to the right of the Labor Party of old. In fact, I know Germany and Sweden have taken significant steps to reduce their tax burden and address their over-extended social security system. While the U.S. is still more conservative, the rest of Europe seems to be moving our way.
