The problem for me with voting for the Democratic Party is that, even if I genuinely like and respect the Democratic candidate (like Lieberman), he would still be beholden to the NEA, the labor unions, the trial lawyers, etc. He couldn't possibly govern nationally as he would if he were in the Republican Party. One's party affiliation does mean a lot in practice and makes it very hard to cross over, especially in Presidential elections.
