I'm in the process of making civil war era horse bits and I'm hoping someone out there can give me some helpful techniques for connecting the shanks to the mouthpiece. How did they do it at that time? I heat the metal to red-white hot and hammer the mouthpeice into a hole in the shanks. Does anyone know of a good source for books on the subject of bitmaking? Thank you
