That Shakespeare's Sonnets evade complete explication testify to their greatness as art.
We have heard much about a supposed homoual connection in some sonnets and a supposed 'dark lady' in others.
My own feeling in reading though,was different.
It seems to me that Shakespeare was attempting a poetic version of the minature self-portrait,analogous with the work of his contemporary Hilliard.
The numerous puns on 'Will' suggest this,and the so-called 'homo-eroticism' is rather a typically Renaissance Narcissicism.
One is reminded of the sort of self-examination we see in Durer's self portraits.
Thoughts?
