: Didn't the beats ruin poetry?
There was a one-man show (well, one man with a three-piece jazz ensemble) in Seattle in 1997. The man performed the life of Jack Kerouac. During one part of the performance he read Mexico City Blues......to the music of the jazz ensemble. And he explained that the poetry only really came together with the music highlighting and meshing with it. And it actually worked. Reading Kerouac's poetry by itself; well it kind of falls flat. But when he read it and the music followed it, supplemented it, parodied it......the effect was amazing and it all fell in to place. And maybe there is such a thing as "jazz" poetry and "jazz" writing...the same kind of wavelength that may not resonate on paper.
