I am currently doing research on references to the sun, moon, and stars in the Bible. I have been using planetarium software to determine the rise and set times of the sun and stars in ancient times. What I have found is that some programs, such as RedShift3 and The Sky provide close to the same information, while Starry Night consistently differs from the others by about 2 minutes. This is true for both contemporary and ancient dates. When I compared their results for recent dates with data from the US Naval Observatory, I found that RedShift3 agreed in every instance, The Sky agreed most of the time, and Starry Night was always a bit off. Ironically, RedShift3, which is from England, was the cheapest of the 3 programs by far. Can I ume that RedShift3 is the most accurate for ancient data? I realize that all such software is based on algorithms and cannot be completely accurate. Am I missing a better program that is out there? I am new to all of this and would appreciate any help. I have also never chatted online before and hope I have done this correctly.
