Hello, Neil! Although I don't live in New York, a little web research led me to a couple of links that may help.

Directions to Pupin Obs., Columbia U. http://www.astro.columbia.edu/directions.html
The first one is for an astronomy program at Columbia University. You may try to contact Mr. Noel-Storr for specifics, or for other contacts, such as clubs in the area. The second link is for directions to the observatory the university uses. I'm not sure where it is, but you'd be more familiar than I. The third link is to a gentleman in New Jersey that has a private observatory. I'd contact him for sure. He'd be familiar with observing under the glare of NYC skies and could be helpful.
I hope this helps. Of course, if you find yourself in the Phoenix area, look me up!
I own and operate a small observatory in SW AZ where I educate the public and do variable star research. : I just got my first telescope and I live in Manhattan. I can see about 10 stars and Jupiter and Saturn from my street. I want to find a place where I can drive that is not too far that I can take my scope for some dark viewing. Does anybody have a favorite place that they can recommend which is near (less than an hour from)Manhattan? : Thanx in advance : Neil Farley
