The best comics certainly are art, just as the best jazz is a type of musical art. Comics are also a reminder of the golden age of childhood which is fast diminishing. Look around you: lots of sterile, childless couples, Halloween is morphing into an adult Mardis Gras, Kids' cartoons are either insipid and for the very young or they're adult like Bevis and head and South Park. Kids' comics have virtually dried up and comic book stores contain so much adult material that kids often feel uncomfortable there. Adventure films all contain soft core , kids' sports are organized by adults and made more adult like,....I could go on and on.
We've created the loathesome institution of the adult child and allowed real chilhood to slip into neglect. This makes me howling mad.
