For all of you who are about to put flowers on the grave of good art, fear not - Clical Art lives on! I suppose the world does not want to give much attention to the small but growing number of artists out there who have forsaken the empty, haphazard and meaningless "art" of our modern times to create work of depth, meaning and beauty. Many of these artists even paint and sculpt figuratively (gasp! - art that actually looks like SOMETHING. What a concept. Sort of like poetry that rhymes.) They believe that art is meant to uplift and inspire and provoke us to think and reflect. They believe that their audience has a brain and that they don't need to pee in jars to get their messages across. They also believe that the most beautiful thing on earth is the human form and so for them, to capture it in a moment and immortalize it in paint or bronze, is the highest and most divine calling of art. They believe that art is a perfect whole composed of purpose and skill - a deficency in either can only result in mediocrity.
THEY ARE OUT THERE. They may often call themselves "Clical" or "Romantic realists" but above all they consider themselves artists with a calling...and that is what makes them great. The same sense of calling has been felt by great artists for centuries.
...and they're growing. From exhibits dedicated to figurative art in New York to organizations and schools promoting and teaching the "old ideals" - the making significant art - The legacy of Michelangelo, DaVinci, Raphael, Rembrant, Chardin, Vermeer and the rest lives on.
Put away the back berets and smocks and break out the champagne. Good art is still here.
