Of course "alternative" is poor music. Out of all the
"new rock" that has come out in recent years, I would
have to list among the better groups:
Jawbreaker
Sunny Day Real Estate
The For Carnation
Aerial M
Jets To Brazil
Slint (sure, they're from the late 80's and early 90's, but they were years ahead of their time)
An obscure band from Texas named Blueprint
Older Promise Ring stuff
and a some other relatively obscure bands
People lump these bands into the loose genre of
post-rock/post-punk/indie-pop/emo-core
Whatever that means
The reason why these bands are good is because they,
at least in my humble opinion, capture WHAT IS REALLY
GOING ON IN THE SUBCONSCIOUS MIND of American culture.
I don't see any overt politics in their music or lyrics.
There is anger, hatred, fear and lust, as well as joy,
real spirituality, and genuine love among other things
in the music of the listed groups.
Plato was right. Nietzsche was right. Schopenhauer
was right. Wagner was right.
