: But what we like is forced upon us. Music companies only make deals with the groups they want to promote. It's not that the record company execs enjoy that type of music, it's that they want to force that music on us, the consumer. Music is not determined by the mes, it is in the hands of middle-age to older men making a profit off of what they control us to like. I believe "Walking on the Sun" by Smashmouth has a couple of lines referring to this.
That's all very well to say, and it is true. But let's not forget that as much as we blame the execs, the fault doesn't entirely lie with them. Yes, they do decide what they are going to promote, but what they promote is what they think people will like. And most of the bands that are promoted by a big label does become successful. How? Because people listen to it, or them, and they like what they hear.
Also, there are bands that start out on independant, indie labels, but then sign on with a major label because they want success and recognition. Some bands, once they have achieved that, change their sound to suit their audience. Sugar Ray is an example.
My point is that we can't just blame the execs for all these things, when in fact, if we rejected the music that was forced on to us, they would stop promoting that kind of music.
