A. Smith was first to recognize that the principal drag on England's economy resulted from the practice of sending lazy people to high school and college, where their time was spent avoiding the hard work of answering for themselves questions relating to economic conditions and influences. In other words, they expected to be "given information" but were unable to contribute anything to the discussion at hand.
As a remedy, Smith proposed to send these students to a giant pin factory where they could work with objects more suited to their intellectual curiosity. This was done. The economy prospered.
